Early Treatment Is Not About Getting Braces Right Away

Parents are usually relieved to learn that early orthodontics at Kinser Orthodontics is not about putting braces on young kids. It is about guiding the growth and development of your child's jaw and teeth, preventing more serious problems later.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial evaluation by age 7, when adult teeth are erupting. At that visit we check for issues like overbites, open bites, crowding and gummy smiles, many of which are not visibly apparent until prevention is too late.

Beginning treatment at the optimal time means the best result, plus less time and expense down the road.

Signs Your Child May Need an Early Evaluation

Early treatment is not always necessary, but schedule a screening with our orthodontist if you notice any of the following:

  • Crowded or misplaced teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or biting food
  • Early loss of baby teeth
  • Mouth breathing
  • Finger or thumb sucking
  • Jaws that pop when opening and closing
  • Jaws and teeth out of proportion to the rest of the face

Not sure? We are happy to answer any questions at a free consultation.

What Early Screening Can Prevent

Some oral health issues can be avoided entirely with early screening and two-phase treatment, including open bites, where the upper and lower teeth cannot touch when the jaws are closed, and crossbites, where the rows of teeth do not meet correctly. A misaligned bite can contribute to tooth decay, gum disease, stress on the jaw muscles and headaches.

Early care can also help address speech difficulties and protect protruding teeth from injury. When your child comes in, our team performs a thorough evaluation of their smile and bite, explains exactly what we see, and takes time to answer every question before any treatment begins.

Common Questions About Two-Phase Treatment

What is two-phase orthodontic treatment?

It is early orthodontic care that guides the growth of a child's jaw and teeth while they are still developing, followed later by treatment such as braces or Invisalign to finish the alignment once more adult teeth are in.

When should my child have their first evaluation?

By age 7, per the American Association of Orthodontists. That is when adult teeth are erupting and potential problems are easiest to spot and prevent.

Does every child need two-phase treatment?

No. Early treatment at this stage may not be necessary at all. The evaluation simply tells us whether your child would benefit and, if so, when the ideal time to start would be.

What are the benefits of starting early?

Prevention of issues like open bites and crossbites, protection for protruding teeth, support for clear speech, and often less treatment time and expense later on.

Is the evaluation free?

Yes. Your child's first visit includes a free orthodontic exam, digital x-ray and personalized treatment plan, plus a transparent breakdown of any future costs.
